OLD WATER-MAIN COLLAPSES.

The work. of clearing away tho big earth fall nt Ngahauranga is making slow progress, owing to the tact that the spoil has to be carted all tho way to the Thorndon reclamation. Yesterday the City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) and Councillor L. ai'lienzio visited the scene for tho purpose of ascertaining tho extent of tho nienaco to tho water-mains by tho heavy fall of earth, it was found that tho old water-main from the Wainni reservoir had been fractured, hut, fortunately, the now mains wero found to bo intact. These are laid hinder the asphalt cycle track, and are at present in some danger from the heavy traffic which is passing over the footpath and cycle-track, owing to the obstruction of the road by the spoil from the slip. This nienaco is to bo removed by prohibiting the passage of steam wagons mid motor lorries over that portion of tho road. It is expectcd that the ■ removal of tho slip will take about a month altogether, for small earth falls still continue to be loosened from tho cliff- Also,'about iiine feet back from the edge of the cliji thore has appeared a de.ep fissure, which the next heavy rain will, it is regarded as ccrtain, widen; with the result that another heavy fall will add to tho worries of the roadmen below. The work of repairing the railway line at Ngahauranga,. where several washouts occurred during the recent storm, is proceeding apace. Progress lias been rather hindered by the big earth-fall on the road near the station, and the traffic lias been worked on the single track. It is hoped, however, tji have both lines clear for through, traffic by Co clock this evening at the latest. Under the circumstances the train service has been running fairly well.
