VANCOUVER SERVICE.

WELLINGTON'S CLAIMS ADVANCED. In a letter which he has addressed to the Prime Minister,- Mr. E. Newman, member for Rangitikei, directs attention to the disability under which? the port of Wellington and the districts which it serves, labour as a consequence of the Vancouver moil steamers calling only at Auckland. ' Mr. Newman suggests that ■Wellington is the best port of call, if there is.to be only one. It is aj well situated, ho states.- for the export of butter and cheese, and bettor situated for the export of all classes of frozen meat than Auckland. At present frozen meat .is being sent froin tho Wellington district* to Vancouver in several-ways. Live stock is being sent to Auckland and there "shipped, and frozen meat is shipped from -Wellington to Vancouver, via 'Frisco. Both these methods, Sr. Newman states, aro very unsatisfactory • and expensive, and indicato tho necessity of making Wellington a port of call for the Vancouver steamers. . In support of his contention, Mr. Newman quotes the opinion of Mr. J. M. Hair, head of ones of the ..exporting-de-partments in Messrs. Nathan and Co.'s business. Mr. Muir has just returned from a visit to Vancouver, and in an interview "ill -The -Dominion stated -that {herd was a good opening 'in-' British Columbia for Nov Zealand beef, mutton,, and lamb, that at present. Australian meat was largely used, but-that tho feeling in tho trado was tha'i a better demand was arising for first quality meat, which New Zealand alone could supply. As. a further indication of tho importance of tho meat export tra'do to Vancouver, Mr. Newman mentioned that, early last week, over thirty trucks, containing some 210 fat bullocks, wero dispatched from ManaTvatu to Auckland, to bo exported to Van-: couver. • Either Wellington should be made a port of call,' Mr. Newman contends in conclusion, or, if there is to be only one port, that port should be Wellington.
