HOW TO SPEND £2,000,
VIEWS OF THE MAYOR. The amount realised by tlio Citizen# Carnival, some .1:2000, will shortly bo available, and there are many anxious competitors for the special expenditure. The question of how the money is to' be spent will be discussed at a iiU'Cling— probably tdio last—of the Executive Committee of the Carnival to be held to-night at which tho Mayor will bo present. Mr. J. P. Luke (Mayor of Wellington) stated his views yesterday as to how tho money ought to bo spent. His proposal is that with it tho Oriental Bay Esplanado should be completed, and that if necessary n subsidy for this purpose be given by tho council. If, on tho other hand, it is resolved to make a new playing area, ho considers that the best site for it is on the western side of Newtown Park. Here, he says, about twenty acres could bo formed into sports grounds comparatively cheaply, lwlcsd, an additional area could be gained on a higher level, at no formidable cost, and thus a recreation space, aggregating thirty to forty acres, could bo provided in a convenient part of tho city. An extension of about naif a milo of tramway from tho Newtown terminus, skirting tho western stdoof.tho park, would reach tlio proposed ground. ■Mr. Luko is also strongly in favour of tho carnival being held as an annual function, but lie suggests that tho dato should bo Anniversary Day, January' 22, when the weather is usually more to bo trusted than at Eastertide. *
