Frazcr, Government Statistician, who left on a visit to Australia recently, is at present engaged in inquiring into tho methods of compiling statistics iu vogue in the Commonwealth and in Iho various Australian States. Bernard Jlaguire, father of the late Police-Sergeant Maguire (who was fatally shot at i'almorston North during the Powelka scarp), died in Grevmouth last week. Tho deceased was on tho coast in the early days, but later resided in Wellington. For tlio last eighteen months, however, ho has been living in Greymouth. Mr. Joseph M'Cabe. tlio well-known English lecturer, is at present delivering a series of lectures at tho Athenaeum Hall, Melbourne. Two of his lcctures arc entitled "The End of the World" mid "Tlio Evolution of Beautiful Scenery." A Press Association telegram from Christchurch states:—At a meeting of .tho Typographical Union last Saturday, 'Jlr. T. W. Chappel, secretary of tho Typographical Federation, was presented' with a gold watch, in recognition of his work in connection with tho recent Dominion award. Mr. Daniels, salvage export for tho Union Steam Ship Company, returned to Wellington from the scene of tho disaster to tho Indrabarah last ovening. Dr. William J. Mayo, tho famous American surgeon, is contemplating a visit to tho Dominion early next year. He will tnko part iu tho big medical conference which is to be held in Auckland in February next. He proposes leaving the United States in January next. Tho visit of the famous surgeon will Ijo particularly interesting to New Zealand, as a number of doctors from this country have studied in the surgery of Dr. Mayo and his brother. Tho surgery is counted ono of the most modern in tho world, and many skilful operations have been carried out iu it. Jlr. C. A. Bullot, a very old resident of New Plymouth, died thoro on Friday, agoil 71. Jlr. Bullot was born in Toraliaki ill 1812. lie took part in the Maori wars, holding the rank of sergeant in tlio mounted force. Mr. Charles Bagley has been appointed chairman of $ho Mount lloskill load Board for tho twelfth term. The Rev. E. Eliot Chambers, of Lyttelton, bus received u letter from tho secretary of tho Navy League, London, conferring on him the Special Senico Decoration of tho league for his services in the movement and for his devotion to tho causo of Empirp during so many years. Mr. A. Aislabie, District Superintendent of the Colonial Mutual Life Office, Christchurch, has been transferred to tho Wellington office. , Tho Jlov. Canon Garland is at present oil a visit in Auckland. Jlr. D. Jf. Tomlinson, A.0.5.J1., formerly oi' the Otago School of Minos, has been appointed general manager of tho lCnpsan Mines, Limited.
