THE LIVINGSTONE CENTENARY.
STRIKING ADDRESS BY LORD BALFOUIt OF BURLEIGH,
The Livingstone celebrations, winch have drawn together immense multitudes in every fart of the United Kingdom, readied their climax on Wednesday* morning (March 20), .in a thanksgiving service "nt St. Paul's Cathedral (says the "British Weekly"). The Archbishop of Canterbury took the leading part at a gathering at the Albert Hall, arra'nged in every detail by the. London Missionary Society." Perhaps the most striking address was that of Lord Balfour of Burleigh, who rendered priceless service to the cau=? of foreign missions as president of the Edinburgh Conference. To his mind the Livingstone Centenary brings » call for closer union among workers in. the foreign field. He pleaded for tlia co-operation of all Governments in tlio task of tottering the lot of the nativa races. Livingstone was ;eady to work with anyone who would belp in removing tho curse of slavery, "the open sore or the world." - Forty years have passed since his death, and still the cry of tortured slaves comes from the Congo and the Putumnyo. Well might Lord Balfour plead with Christian statesmen, to lay aside national jealousies, and net. iii the spirit of the missionary-explorer, who was indeed "a Catholic Christian. •
