Tho Shannon Drnids' Lodge opened its winter syllabus on Thursday night, when members spent an enjoyable musical evening. There aro signs of slackening in local flax mills with the approach of winter. Tho Wckn Mill has closcd down both strippers, the Mirauui Mill is only running tlireo out of seven, tlio Coylton Mill is closing. doWn shortly, and bther strip, psrs are likely io finish for tho season shortly. Alxmt eighty members and friends attended tho opening "social" of tho Literary and Debating Society in tho Druids' Hall on Tuesday night, when tlio president, tho Rev. Mr. J. A. Mackenzie,, occupied tho chair. A number of competitions and games were indulged in, and songs wero contributed by several of those present. . Two sketches, in lvliich Mrs. Gibson find Mr. J. J. Trainer nnd Misses'Liiisell, Laurvig, Messrs Tilling, and Boors took part, wero very favourably received. At tho conclusion of tlio entertainment supper was provided by tho ladies. Next Tuesddy night tho fil'st debate of tho session, ou tlmt hoary subject, "Fj-po Trado versus Protection," will take place, when Messrs. Barclay and Sinclair will bo tho principal speakers. OTAKI. The sitting of tlie Otaki Magistrate's Court was held yesterday. An affiliation case, Martha Cook v. Sidney Burgess, was dismissed. A claim for maintenance was mado by Mrs. Mullens against Iter husband, but tho Bench suggested a pri'vato settlement so that an old age pension might not bo interfered with. Defendant was '7G years of ogo.
