MAKARA COUNTY COUNCIL.
A meeting of tile Makara Comity Council was held yesterday, Mr. P. T, ilooro presiding. Messrs, li. llaggerty, A. J. Taylor, T. 11. Eastwood, IL. J. Monaghau, and Geo. Monk wero also present .. A progress report on worK in connection "with tiio Agahauranga Gorgo tunnel ccntract was received. The report stated that satisfactory progress was being matte, and tho driving continues to bo good. Tho material which is being taken away is excellent for road purposes. A progress payment of .£137 lis. Gel, was provided by the council. ■_A report on the construction of tho 'Wakefield Gully Koad 'l'ho iVo'rli has been delayed for'ahout a week, owing to tho unsettled weather. An amount of A'G7 IDs. is now dito on the contract. In consequence of Jotters.received from tho Lower llutt and Aliramar Councils, it was decided to protest against tho increased levy imposed by tiio Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. It was pointed out during a discussion that tho Makara Council's contribution to the board' forthe period 1911-12 was .£371 2s. dd., and for 1912-13 was .£425 25., and now this year they wero asked to contribute ,£593 15s. id. In tho letter from the Lower Hutt Council it was suggested that the Vical authorities interested should approach tho Minister for Public Works on the subject of hospital 'expenditure. Tho letter also proposed that a conforenco of local bodies should be held at an early dato, probably lvex.t week. Members of tho Makara Council agreed with tho suggestions of the Lower Hutt Council, and tho chairman (Air. P. T. Moore) was appoint-' ed to represent the Makara Council in sucli a conference. A communication was received from the Trade Commissioner, asking tho council to prepare statistics of the total number of motor-cars and motor-cyclcs registered in tho-borough up till April 30 last. Tho object of tho Trade Commissioner is to ascertain tho relative number of cars and cycles procured during the year ending April 30 from manufacturing companies, and their distribution in llie chief districts of the Dominion, ; Tho letter also stated that last year tho statistics showed Great Britain leading with tho United States, Canada, and Franco us serious competitors in cars. The United Kingdom ivas easily first in cycles.--Re-ceived. , Owing to complaints Teccived. proceedings aro to be taken against all persons whoso stock is found on the roads by tho, ranger more than three times. Some discussion took place in respect to tiio levy which had been imposed on the council in connection with the cost of maintenance of tho llutt .Road. Hie chairman said that if tho assessment was enforced, the council would have to find eomo means to pay it. It was suggested that a toll gate bo erected on tho Gorge Road, in order to collect tho necessary money. It was, however, decided to join in and protest against such a levy. It was decided to pay all the borouzh s workmen engaged in work in connection with the recent wash-outs in the borough Is. Gd. por hour overtime.
