NOTES ON THE RACING.

(By TelflgTaph,—Spoolal Correspondent.) Christchurch, May 9. Heavy rain fell overnight and up till noon, when the weather cleared and remained fine till the last race. Tho going was a good deal cut up. making fast times out of tho question. It was a (lisash'ous day. for backers, for not a singlo favourite scored. C. Emerson rode "three winners during tho afternoon, and further increased.:his..lcad.. A.second on Editah was' the. nearest, which Deeley pot to a win during tho afternoon. Tho stewards inquired into some crossing that took place ill the Juvenile Handicap, and cautioned-D. Anderson, rider of Martel. i Tho weather had cleared when the I horses lined up for the Moreton Hack Handicap. Ciunflash was a slightly better favourite than Gold Wave, but both were unlucky at tho barrier and the former did well to get third, for he was tailed off at the end of a furlong. Safety Pin led to the turn, whore Martian Jlaid took charge, but in tho straight Nithstlalo (who to-day ivas neglected oa tho machine) got through on the fence, and I won very easily at the finish. Safety Pin was at tho head of the'others,, who were strung out. The Open Welter Handicap was a good betting race, the whole of the runners (with the csception of Eaglestono' and Federal) being well backed. A good start saw Eaglestono begin smartly, but Hesiono son ran up to him. ■ At tho end of two furlongs Federal headed the pair, and led till well down the running, when Waikehua, whom F. D. Jones had kept in a good position, ran to tho front, and, hard ridden, was ablo to withstand a challengo by Editah. Britain's Crown was closo up third, and then camo Hesiono with Colleen Mary and Cronstadt tailed

off. Specialform and Miss Sylvia were in demand in the big handicap, and the pair woro tho smartest to begin, but the latter was making "heavy weather" of it the whole way. and-was in dire trouble when the straight was reached. Specialform then had tho race weft in hand, but her rider was over confident, and The Cornet, coming very fast, beat her on the post. Gold Coin was a fair third, and Miss Sylvia and Mumura were the next pair. . Martius and the Cbokcbore bracket (Soottisk Star and Glencannich) and Fender monopolised the attention of backers in the Juvenile Handicap, but a surprise was in store, for Martian Maul jumped out smartly, and had a two lengths' lead when the straight was enI tered. Here tho favourite was lying second, but, though he. was ridden Tight out with tiio whip, he was unable to get better than third place, a neck behind Gold Cup. Flora Macdonald appeared to have a good chance as they swept into the straight, but she was carried out wide, and then finished alongside Formual in fourth place, The Disposal Stakes. looked a good race for Eaglestone, but though be began as well as usual, ho was unfortunate enough to stumble after going a chain, and this lost him his position. Eespond and Stamboul entered tho straight on terms, but in tho run home Stamboul won by a good neck with Eaglestone close up. After tho race the winner was sold to Mr. E. J. Taylor for 40gns. Snnfc Eosalecr was also put up, but was passed in. . There wero six starters in tho Trot which was a' very interesting race. Tho whole'field was evenly backed, there being only 150 tickets difference between the favourite and the outsider. March Hare began very quickly and after being caught at the mile, lie came again and won after a fino finish. . A heavy hail-storm camc on just before tho start of tho last race. Peg started favourite, but the other runners, with the exception of Gnome, woro all well backed. Tho race was run in a blinding rain which made it difficult to pick up the runners until tho straight was reached. Hero tho quintet was bunched, and a grand struggle was witnessed. Peg, in the middle, appeared to bo winning, but then Pilgrim s Way showed up on tho rails, and tho public proclaimed each in turn. When Pes had disposed of Pilgrim's Way Emerson suddenly shot Carolus up on tho outsido and, in a few strides, tho wholo position was changed. In tho last few strides tho stick was drawn on Peg, and Carolus, finishing like a bulldog, won by a neck. Pilgrim's Way was on Peg's quarters and then enmo Gnome and Maplo Leaf.
