ROWING.
(By Mercury.) ARNST EMULATES JOHNSON. July 21.—World's Championship, E. Barry v. 11. Pearco, Thames, England. Keeping in the Public Eye. "Dick" Arnst is quito getting into tho "Jack" Johnson class as ft publicist, 110 certainly appears to have tlio came facility for getting into print. His latest achievement in this liicf is lo bn found in the cabled report; that ho iVas going in for profesioual fishing, the following denial of tlio report, ami tho subsequent repetition of tlio rumour. Tho basis of tiie report was probably tho following cablegram, whicli appca,-cd in tho .Sydney newspapers :— Newcastle, May 2. "Dick" Arnst, who arrived in his launch, Belper, this morning, left this afternoon for Port Stephens. to faking his departure ho took out a fisherman's license. Arnst said it did not follow because ho had taken out a fisherman's license that he had <ione with .scti-11-ing. lie said that in tho event of tho sculling championship being lost to Australia ho would bo quito prepared to go to England, and he felt sure ho could bring tho title back—provided, of course, that tho Australians found sufficient money to see him through. At present, lie added, thero was nothing in.' tlio gam-o. Rather than meet Taddon on the northern rivers, lio would take a job of chopping wood. Imagine Him Chopping Wood! This is not very definite, except on one point. It is very apparent that he does not mean to accept Pe.ddon's terms for a race for the Australian championship with regard to rowing away from tho Parramatta. Ono cannot imagine "Dick" Arnst chopping wood for a living. A "Tassio" at Henley, .Not only mil Australasia, be keenly interested in thi world's professional sculling race. The Diamond Sculls at Henley early in July will also liayo nu Antipodean interest", as is shown in the following paragraph from tho Tasmanian letter to the Sydney "Ikfereo" "Tasmania will again bo interested ill the Royal Henley regatta of this year, as by a recent mail tho Tasmanian Rowing Association forwarded Cecil M'Villy*s entry, anil declaration as an amateur, so that ho may com note in. tho Diamond Sculls. Writing from London on tho 19th -ult., to Mr. T. S. Nettlcfold, hon. secretary, Tasmanian Hewing Association, M'Villy describes tho recent inter-'Varsity raco as a fine ono. Henley regatta is to bo held on July 2 to 5, and competition promises to bo even keener than last year, it is rumoured that Kinnear, Voviell, and M'Cullough will start m tho Sculls, while Hoffman, tho German champion. will also bo there with s:)'ioiis intentions. M'Villy himself is very lit. and scales well over 13st. lie has had tho rigging cf his boat altered, and thinks it will bo an improvement. Ho intends to liave two months' work before the Diamond Sculls, and says one can easily stand it, as tho climate is heavier in England tliafi in Tasmania. >lJc is desirous of arranging with Wm. Albany, tlio sculler to coach him if possiblo. Ho says the Suffragettes are stirring things up, anil had oven threatened to burn tho Thames Bowing Club down; consequently it is miller police protection night and day. It was rumoured they intended to interfere with tlio inter-'V arsity race, but nothing e*ini& of it, fiiul it \vps thought that the prospects of a ducking m tho river squashed their cntlmsiusin." In a wav, too, followors of local athletio matters will find a degreo of personal interest in this from tho faot that tho sculler in question is a nephew of Mr. R. W. M'Villy, of the local rowing, amateur athlotic, and boxing associations.
