The Ashburton Club experienced tho usual good fortune for its autumn meeting, which, despite tlie heavy rain yesterday, was opened to-day in glorious weather, and before a good attendance. The going, which was a trifle holding in the morning, dried considerably as the day wore on. Tho Cup went to Sir G. Clifford's Glenfinnan, who was in the van practically throughout. After tho race the Cup, donated by Mr. E. Gates, was presented to Sir Geo. Clifford, who received it amidst cheers. The stipendiary steward was in attendance, but thero was nothing necessitating action by him. C. Emerson was called before tho olub stewards after tho Cup, and severely admonished for returning to weigh in without waiting for the clerk of tho course. During the afternoon the Chokebore horseman rodo his fiftieth winner for the season. Decley, who was on Thuringa and Oxenhope, brought his winning total up to forty-nine. A good start was effected in the opening ovent, for which Nithsdale and Editah were backed in that order. The former, on the fence, got out well, hut Editah was slow to movo, and was soon sent back. At the end of a furlong Cosy Corner and Safety Pin were out by themselves, and hero Mnrtian Maid got chopped back, nnd her chance was extinguished. Safety Pin shook off Cosy Corner in the straight, but Gold Cup then challenged, and in a close finish was only beaten by a head. Vanquish was a poor third, and then came Cosy Corner, Martian Maid, and Kimona. ThuTinga, with Deeley in the saddle, was a better favourite than Ladrono in the Fairfield Welter, where the remainder were neglected. . After a false start, in which Eaglestono and Coleen Mary wont through., the tapes, a good dispatch was made. The quick beginner, Eaglestono, made tho pace from Thuringa, with tho others spread out. Tho favonrito put a break on all but Eaglestono and Hesione, but this pair stopped in tho straight, whero Ladrone put in a good run, but had no chance with Thuringa, who won by a length. G'enowl cama fast at the finish, nnd just beat Hesione. Colleen Mary was at tho head of tho others. At tho bottom of tho straight North Polo got on to the heels of Cronstadt and fell, breaking his neck. His rider (E, Murfitt) was uninjured. Great interest was _ taken in_ the Cup field, and somo spirited 1 betting took placc. Bulletin, who stripped a picture, was a few tickets better favourite than Glenfinnan, with Canute next in demand. It-was a flag start, but it was a good ono. Glenfinnan, on the inside, was the quickest to begin, nnd, with Specialform and St. Kevin, led down tho back. The next bunch was headed by The Cornet, Mnmura, and Canute, while Bulletin was tailed off last. Miss Sylvia and Muniura moved up to the leaders at the half-mile, and then Specialform took chargo, and led into the straight from Miss Sylvia. The lntter ran wide, and Emerson (on Glenfinnan) ran up to Specialform. Coming on full of running the unreliable son of Clanranalil ran in an easy winner. Specialform was well clear of St. Kevin, nnd then camo Corrie. Tho Cornet, and' Miss Sylvia. Golden.Morn (Cannie Chiel—Good Morning) a member of R. Longlcy's Ricearton team, was preferred to Martel in tho Laghmor Plate, and Glencannich and Flora Macdonald were tho next in order of favouritism. At tho start Formnal, a full-sister to Spccialform and Flora Macdonald, jumped out clear of tho others. With two furlongs gone tho pair were just ahead of Golden Morn and Mnrtel, and tho others strung out. Goldon Morn easily nsserted herself in the straight, and won easily by three lengths. Flora Macdonald was ridden out to beat Formnal. Gunresb, Martel, Joan,. and Countess May wero the next to finish. The trot was a good thing for tho favourite, who took chnrgo over tho lust mile, and won anyhow. The Irish-bred hlly First Glance touched a very short price in the Trial Handicap, and she was the good thing the machine indicated. She did not get eff well, but soon raccd to a good position in behind Reward, who made the pace fast to tho turn. At the distance Beard, ridinir confidently, tool; tho favourite to tho front, and she won very comfortably from Glenfin, with Camerine just clear of Gunflash, who had been badly left, but had then put up a great performance by running up to the front at five furlongs. Afterwards, however, ho tired. Tho threo fop-weights were evenly backed iu tho concluding event, which was mi interesting raco throughout. Pilgrim's Way stripped well, and, though moving a trifle short in the preliminary, ho shook this off at the end of a furlong. Peg was backward, but her trainer was confident that sho would run a good race. Oxenhope was as round as an apule, and certainly never stripped better. From an •excellont start Oxenhope was the first to show out, while Pilgrim's Way and Peg failed to pace it with their big weights. Oxenhope took matters easily for two furlongs, and was then joined by Pilgrim's Way. Both riders then set to work with a will, but neither could head off tbo other. Deeley, on Oxenhope, had the inside running, and this was a big advantage. Entering the straight he shook Pilgrim's Way off. Peg then camo fast 011 the rails, and a good Taco down the straight saw Deeley land his second winner for the day. Pilgrim's Way finished 011 well again, and beat Peg for second place. The other pair wero down the numlns.
