N.Z. FARMERS' UNION.

THE HA WEE A BRANCH. The annual meeting of the Ilawera branch of 'tho New* Zealand Falrmers' Union was held last week, Mr. D. .1. Willis presiding. The cxMutive, in prcsc-nting the annual report, stated, inter nliu: The balancesheet shows tho branch to have just come out square after paying the Dominion and. provincial levy of (is. Ikl. per member to tli# Now Zealand Union. It is to bo regretted that farmers in this district do not support and tako more interest in tho work of this branch, which means so nuioli to the union as a whole. It is not merely tho Ilawera branch that you arc supporting, but tho union throughout the Dominion, which, fortunately, has in some districts a very Strong holding, nnd is doing good work. It behoves all farmers to stand together and strengthen that union, for it means so much to tbe farmer having such a body to watcli his interests. The chairman, iu moving tho adoption of the report, taid he regretted the apathy of the farmers ill regard to the union. There was no doubt, that the union as a 'body had done good work, and that it had come to stay; "The local branch earlier in tire year had had very good meetings, which resulted in benefits being gained bv the far mors. 110 hepsd renewed interest would be shown ill tho branch nest vear, - and it remained for every in- ■ dividual-member' to 'give tho branch a lift • Tlr> following officers were elected President, Mr. D. J. Willis; .vice-president, jr r , 11. E. Batten J-secretary and treasurer, Jlr. F. G. Treweek; committee, Messrs. Hunter, Grant,' 1- inlay, and Luston; auditor, Jlr. E. F. I'age. Jlr. A. Hunter was appointed delegate to the Provincial Conference, as Mr. Willis would bo unabl» to attend. THE DAIRY INDUSTRY. MARGARINE COMPETITION. The following letter has been received ly Messrs. Hill and Barton, Ltd., butter merchants, from their Glasgow correspondents.— . . . "Our last letter gave you our opinion ns to the cause of the low price prevailing for butter this season, and wo still think the large consumption of margarine which is going on has a good deal to do with the, present position of the butter market. The consumption of margarino all over in England, Scotland, and Wales is much heavier than it has been before owing to the fact that quality is _ nowmuch improved-nnd is being extensively advertised and pushed by retailers, as it pays them better than butter. No doubt, also, something must bo said with regard to those houses who have been depressing that market all this season to suit their own ends, but, after all, if demand had been at all good,'price -would have been much higher than it is at present. - "New -Zealand cheese are-not..taking (he market.so well this) season, owing to the. fact that the quality has riot given absolute satisfaction; a great number of shipments have' been arriving out of condition nnd fault was also being found with the flavour, and some buyers say thev contain too much moisture, and consequently lose a good deal in short weight if not used up quickiy. To-day New Zealand cheese are selling in Glasgow at 62s (id. to G3s.,' wliilo Canadians make Gls! to 655. New Zealand butter is quoted UGs. to 118s. in Glasgow, whilo Australian can be secured at 110s. to Ills. Hale of Danish butter has been better lately, as quotation has been coining lower recently; this week's price is 2s. Gil. less than last week, and w'c expect a fall for. next week from 3s. to 4s. per cwt which, of course, will affect all colonial butters." .
