A Farewell Tea, Yesterday afternoon a very enjoyable handkerchief tea was given by Airs. JJevine at her house on. Tho Terrace tor Miss Henrys, who is leaving next week tor Australia, where her manage is to take place. Shortly niter the arrival of the gyi'sts a most amusing animal competition was held, i'iio winners eventually proving to bo Mrs. Hciily (first) and Aliss Al'Anlie (second), lieyroduetions on the grama-, phone of famous tinkers ot the day were! given and greatly enjoyed. Tea was laid in the dimngream, which win decorated with bowis and v.i-rsot clii'.\saiu»oaiu.ms. White chrysanthemums ui;o were arrangod on the tea table, tliu va.-es being connected with each other by whito satin ribbons, covered with silver horseshoes. Chrysanthemums and autumn foliage were again to bo seen ill tho drawingrooiu, w'Jiere Airs. Dsviivo reec.ivwl her guests. The hostess wore a gown of amethyst silk popun, with drapcit skirt, and bodice trimmed with amethyst net and embroideries. Atiss Devine wore a gown of soft grey silk, embroidered with blue. Aliss Henrys was in a navy blue coot and skirt, .with narrow white stripe, and facings of shaded blue siik; large white hat with white ostrich leathers. Mrs. Henrys wore a blue coat and skirt, and black velvet hat with touches oi golden brown. Airs. Ilealy (her daughter) was in an .amethyst costume, white furs, and black voluuirs hat. Atiss 0. The bride to bo was tho recipient of a large number, of dainly gifts in the way of handkerchiefs. Death of Mrs. D'Oylcy Carte. / The death is anuunced from London of Airs. D'Oyiey Carte. Tho name of D'Oylcy Carte is "iniiissolubly associated with the names of the two most gifted collaborators known to tho lyric stage—Gilbert and Sullivan—and it was the lute Air. D'Oyiey Carte under whose management nearly every opera they wrote was produced during iiis regime at the Savoy Theatre. Airs. Carte, whose death is now recorded, was a woman of distinct attainment and business enterprise. She was educated at the London University, where sho carried off honours in mathematics, mechanics, ami logic—three excellent subjects of utilitarian value in the'battle of life. L'or some years before she married Air. Carte she was his private secretary, and during that time she made no fewer than fifteen visits'to the United States on his behalf. On the death of Air. Carte she continued the management of the Savoy Theatre herself, alid married Air. Stanley Bou!ter ( n well-icnown London barrister and solicitor. From the end of IDOG until 190S, she presented a series of revivals of Gilbert and Sullivan operas, including "The Yeoman of the Guard," "The Gondoliers," "Patience," "Tho Alikado," "H.M.S. Pinafore." aiid "lo'.authe." Durring this period, in fact professionally, she adhered to the name of Airs. D'Oyiey Carte. Dancc at Oriental Bay Kiosk. Convalcsccnt Home. A meeting of the Convalescent Homo | was held at Mrs. Pearce's on Wednesday, May 7. There were present Alcsdanie.s Altoi'lionse (in the chair), A. l'cnrce, Litch- | licid, W Young, and E. Nathan (secretary). The matron reported four patients admitted and six discharged during the month. Gifts were acknowledged with ilia iks from Alesdames West, Knowies, ltubison, Nicol, and Friend. Mrs, 1!. J. Seddon is at present on a visit to Auckland. On Tuesday Mrs. Seddou paid a call at the Scddon Memorial College in Wcllesley Street. Miss Johnston, Lower Hutt, who has been oil an extended trip to relations in India, returned by the Ulimaroa from Svdn.y vcsterday. She was accompanied bv lifi' cousin, Mr. liobert Taylor. 'The cnte i'la in ers known as "The Serenader-,'" who are at present appearing at the Theatre lioyal, made a trip to the Porirua Mental Asylum yesterday and cntertainul the patients there.
