COAL PRICES ADVANCE.
POSSIBLY ONLY TEMPORARY. ■ Tho State Coal Department- has advanced the price of coal at tho depots as from May 1, the reasons given .for the increase being that cartage rates and the wages paid to tho men employed in handling the coal havo increased, aud that the depots have been running at a loss. Henceforth tho cash prices charged to householders will be;— Town rates: Ton, 335.; half-ton, 175.; quarter-toil, Bs. fld.; one cwt., Is. lOd. Suburban rates: Ton, 365.; half-ton, 18s, Gd.f quartcr-ton, 9s. fid.; one cwt., 2s. An additional charge will bo' made in localities where extra labour is entailed. Commenting upon Iho increase iu prices, l™ Fraser (Minister for Mines) said that when the new mine at Point Elizabeth, is ill full swing it would probably be possible lo reduce the rales. lhe Government did not seek to make a prolil, but desired to make the coal pay, and would not supnly.it. for less than ' /<?-'• .
