A FREE FIGHT.
SUFFRAGETTE RIOT IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE. FOR FREEDOM OF SPEECH. MOUNTED POLICE DISPERSE THE MOB. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright London, May 4. At a free speech demonstration in Trafalgar Square, Mr. Keir Hardie, Labour M.P., and Mr. Cunningliamo Graham wero the chief speakers. The crowd fought the police and rescued prisoners. Mounted police charged tho crowd and cleared the Square. Many persons were trampled on and sustained minor injuries. (Rcc. May 5, i 0.30 p.m.) i London, May 5. There was a orowd of 30,000 at the Trafalgar Square demonstration. Messrs. Keir Hardie, J. C. Wedgwood, and J. Martin, members of the House of Commons, and Mrs. Despard delivered speeches against restriction of the freedom of speech, owing to the prohibition of Suffragette open-air-meetings. Tho arrival of a trades procession, wherein thero was n group of Suffragettes, carrying flags, started the trouble. Tho women attempted to mount the plinth of the Nolson Column, but the police barred them. A couplo of Socialists then'essayed to climb on to the plinth, but the police threw them down. Thereafter for an hour there were serious conflicts between the.polico and the mob. A solid mass of men and women hurled itself against'tho constables surrounding the column. Mr. Keir Hardio urged the mob to disperse. There was much screaming from the women, who woro wedged in tho struggling mass. The police exercised tlio greatest forbearance, but at last were compelled to hit out in self-defence, and some of tho demonstrators wwo badly handled in the fighting. A hooligan, clement was apparent in tho disturbance. A squadron, of mounted police eventually cleared tho Square. Seven men were arrest?d.
MEETING BROKEN UP. (llcc. May 5, 10.30 p.m.) London, May 5. Tho crowd broke up a Suffragette meeting in Hydo Park. A SUFFRAGETTE PARTISAN. SURETIES OR GAOL. London, May 4. Mr. Georgo Larobury, ex-Socialist M.P., who was charged with incitement to crime in connection, with the militant Suffragette movement, was bound over for a yea,r, himself in .£IOOO, and two sureties of £500 each. Ho declined to find sureties, and was t sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Bail, pending an appeal, was allowed. (Rec. May 5, 10.30 p.m.) London, May 5. Mr. Ltinsbury's daughter and another suffragette Imvo been; arrested.
