THE SECOND EXPRESS.
A FOKLOKN ATTEMPT. In response to a request from tlio Ttf Awainutu Chamber of Commerce, backed by Mr. Thos. Ballinger, the Minister foi Railways was addressed by the Wellington Chamber of. Commerce on the subjcct of the second Wellington-Auckland express, the question asked being whether tlio express could be continued with a reduced number of carriages. When tlio matter was brought up at yesterday's meeting tho secretary (Mr. H. D. Vickory) stated that tho only reply ho had received was a wiro dated April 21, which' stated that the council's telegram had. been received, and its contents noted, (laughter.) A voice: That means no train. Mr. Ballinger' thought that a strong protest should bo made 'against tho stopping of the sccoud express'. It was a most valuable train. Peoplo were ablo to arrive at 7 o'clock in tho morning and leave at 9 o'clock at night, which gavo them a full day in town. Auckland was also protesting—it was always protesting —but this time with no mow effect than Wellington. It was losing tho mid-day train. . _ Mr. E. G. Pilchor stated that tho Department said that tho second express wnj mostly used by Palmerston North people, and it cost iIOO a day. ...... Tho president said that ho did not think they could do anything further in tlio matter, .and eo the matter was dismissed.
