LOWER COURT, CHARGE BROUGHT & DROPPED. GAMING. ACT CASE. In the Magistrate's Court oil Saturday, before Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M., a caso was called against Andrew Martin. The charge was that he was a bookmaker, and had betted in the Wellington Hotel on April 2. Inspector Hendroy stated that the police did not propose to jjo 011 with the caso because they only had evidence that one bet had been made, and his Worship had already held that a man charged ill the words "being a bookmaker he did bet" did not bring himself within tho Statute by making one bet. Tho information against Martin was thereupon dismissed. Mr. T. M. Wilford, Martin's counsel, stated that he had testimonials to the effect that Martin was a 11m 11 of irreproachable characer. Martin had never made a bet. An inquiry should be made as to the grounds 011 which the policc ofiiccr who swore the information against Martin proceeded. He would have a report made to the Justice Department. Inspector Hendrey remarked that tho police had evidence as lo something in tho nature of a bet being made. The. charge was withdrawn, simply because of the Magistrate's decision iii another case. I OTHER CASES. Robert William Guest was fined .£1 for having assaulted Thomas Driscoll. For insobriety, Elizabeth Kc-iupton was fined 10s., George Clarence 10s., Frank Flynn £1, and knud Olson 10s. Mary! Johnston was sentenced to ono month's imprisonment for having importuned in Dijon Street. Alexander M'Donald was fined 10s. for insobriety, and ,£1 for having committed •a certain act in 'i'inakori l!oad.
