SYDNEY'S "FIRST REAL" SPECTACLE. " L THE.YOUNG ARMY. By Telozraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. Hay 4, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, May 4. Sydney yesterday had its first real demonstration of what compulsory training is doing for Australia, when 20,000 khaki-clad cadets, drawn from the metropolitan and suburban areas, were massed in the Domain. From there they marched, with their rifles on their shoulders, via Hunter and George Streets past the saluting base at the Town Ball, whero Lord Denman, Governor-General of Australia, who had specially conio from Melbourne for tho review, Sir Gerald Strickland, Governor of Western. Australia, and the military and naval heads, with a brilliant gathering Were assembled. Tho weather was fine, and dens© and enthusiastic crowds were gathered in tho Domain attd along tho whole route, which was lined with the militia forces. Marching four deep,..the Cadets' lino of .procession spread over five miles, and took over two hours to pass a given j point. The sight was an inspiring one, as tho long line of Australia's young army wound its way with a martial swing between the checring mnSses. Numerous bands aiul tho street decorations added greatly to.the effect/. Older soldiers fell in at the rear, of the column. Though tho ranks of the pafade included many raw Tecrnits, the boys acquitted therhselves excellently, and with a soldierly' tearing. BOY SCOUT MOVEMENT, J REQUEST BY LIEUT.-GENERAL BADEN-POWELL. BadenPowell, founder of the' Boy Scout movement, on behalf of a deputation, asked, the Board of Education to favbur more cohesion between tho schools and tho boy scout movement. . Mr. J. A. Pease, president of the board, replied that he :was anxious , that no spirit of militarism should be associated with the elementary schools. A certain number of parents feared this, and. he thought there was some justification for. the feeling that tho boy. scouts' training was merely a military mpvement fosijered in order to secure compulsory service. .throughout tho country.
