,1. WHAT WANGANUI WANTS,

Wanganui, May 2. ' Mr. W. A. Vcitcli, M.P., has sent an urgently-worderl memo. to tho Primo Minister, drawing attention to tho necessity of forest conservation on the banks of the Wanganui River, and asking him to arrango for the Forestry Commission to inspect and report thereon 1 . He points out that many thousands of-acres on each side of tho river are without roads or railways, that ,the river is the sole medium of cozhmunica.tion, and, unless tho forest on the banks is conserved with a view to keeping the level as high as possible in the dry season, and as low as possible in flood time, gravo .consequences may ensuo to £ettlers.| Mr. Vcitch has also written to the Postmaster-General, conveying to him'the strongly-expressed desire of many river settlers that the Government should start a Stato steamer service on tho, river. Mr. Vcitcli points out that the present mail contract with a private company expires, in about two years, and he urges tho Postmaster-General to moko inquiries in tho Old Country and in Now Zealand as to a suitablo type of 6teamers to replace tho present service.
