NO TAINT IN CITY WATER.
RAIN EITECTS A CURB. The big rainfall during tho past twentyfour hours has effected a complete ' euro in the caso of tho Wainui water. In a statement made a fdw days ago to a Dominion reporter, tho City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) said that ho expected that tho taint in tho water, which arose from tho presence of vegetable organisms, would disappear after the first big fall of rain, and this has proved ito bo correct. The taint, both in respect to taste arid smell, had entirely disappeared yesterday, thanks to tlio big flush given to tho Wainui reservoirs. Proof that the taint is not confined to Wellington 19 furnished by Mr. John Deans, a visitor fci Wellington from Victoria, 8.C., where tho samo trouble was experienced last year. There was the usual outcry on tho part of the public, and Mr. Deans it his business to, write to many of the health officials in Canada and the United States on the subject, and in return he was supplied with a deal of information, from which it was deduced that tho ing of city water supplies by vegetablo matter was by no means uncommon. One of tho reports came from Boston, and was accompanied by an exhaustive analysis of tho water which had been affected there. The.water of Vancouver, which has its source in the snow-fields of the mountains, has been similarly tainted on occasions.
