_ DEPUTATIONS AT TIMARU. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ' Timaru, May 1. The Hon. W. H. Ilerries, Minister for Railways, in the course of In's tour of inspection of the southern lilies, reached Timaru this afternoon. He.opened., t.hp .pew .Ambulance Hall, making some appreciative remarks on llie valuo of brigade work. A deputation of business men waited on Hie Minister to ask for improved facilities for working trucks on the wharf, and also for the enlargement of (he passenger station aud shuntin™ yard. Mr. Ilerries promised that the officers accompanying him will inquire into the matter of wharf facilities. As to en.larg'ng tlio station that would depend, on whether a special loan could bo raised for such purposes, and ho must await tho Hon. Jas. Allen's advice.
Tho deputation pointed out the inconvenience of a twopenco charge to enter tlvo platform when the espressos; were in, ps it was difficult to get tickets,'and asked that an annual pass ho issued at a reasonable rate. The Minister thought this a reasonable request. A dopultt'oß. from the Navy League asked for an excursion train from Waiinato to Lyttelton, to convey South Canterbury school children to see tho warship, if rough weather prevented her from calling at Tiinaru. The Minister promised a train if it were really desired. Other deputations will interview the Minister to-morrow morning, and then ho will inspect the Fairlic line.
