■' EVIDENCE ON CABLE RATES. Br Teleeraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, April 30. Before the Empire Trade Commission, JXr. Oxenham, Secretary to tho Postal Department, gave evidence in favour of a State-owned Atlantic cable, so that tho Pacific Cable Board'would havo full control of the traffic between the United Kingdom and Australia, and be in a position to provide tho cheapest, speediest, and most efficient, service possible in tho circumstances. He suggested that tho ordinary cablo Tates should be reduced to 2s. a word, press work to 6d., deferred messages to Is., and week-end cables to 6d.
