the last fortnightly meeting of tlio Lower Hutt Borough Council, prior to, tho elections on "Wednesday, was held last Thero were present: Tho Mayor (Mr. L. P. Bunny) and Councillors llobbs, Ball, Clendon. lienipthorne, Hodgiris, and Knight. . The Employees' Association notified tho council of the hearing of tlio general labourers' dispute,-and asked their co-opcr-ation in ro same.—Hceeived. The Dominion Perrolitli Company acknowledged receipt of tlio council's letter ro "water supply, anil regretted that they could not see their way to pay tlw amount (i:!U) required by the council, but would be quite willing to pay ,£2O. They also stated that for this sum they could get tin efficient supply of their own.—On the motion of the Mayor, the borough euginer was instructed lo uegotialo with tho company.
The Hutt Park Committee wrote, slating that unless .a horse-mower was procured,- grounds could" not be got ready for the hockey clubs at the lime appointed, and this ivould mean a loss of revenue to the committee. A lawn mower could be obtained for JJ4O, and they asked tho council if they would grant half this amount, provided the Petone Council contributed tho other half.—Oll tho motion of tho Mayor, tho coimmtleo is to bo allowed the use of tho borough's lawn mower uutil May 2.
The Fire Brigade complained that on the occasion of a fire at White's Line, Mr. Ingrain refused to connect the pumps directly into the main, as requested. They asked who was to give instructions for the additional pressure of water when a fire look place. The brigade also complained that they had not yet heard from tho engineer re'the alteration lo the system of ringiug the fire-bell. Mr. Ingram wrote, slating that at tho linio of the request lie was experiencing some trouble with the pumps, and, under the circumstances could' not very weil connect the pumps with the main. The engineer also reported that under the circumstances Mr. Ingram conJU not put on the pressure. 'Ho had turned it on as 50011 as he could. It was resolved to inform the brigade that there were circumstances which prevented tho pressure being turned inlo the mains at tho particular time mentioned, but that ho connected the pinups directly with the main as suon as ever possible. They are also lo l;e informed that the engineer is looking into the system of ringing Hie lire-bell. An application was received from Mr. T. Coffey, to allow him to take loads.of. sand up to 2! tons weight over the bridge at Moiling.—ll was resolved to inform the writer that.Hie council has a by-law prohibiting any load of over two tins passing ovci> the bridge, and they cannot see their way to depart therefrom. The Miiamar liorough Council aske:l if the Hutt Borough Council would co-oper-ate in .a joint protest to be made -to the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board against the high levy which had been made for the current year.—lt wis. resolved to co-operate as desired, and also lo protest to the Government with regard to local bodies not being represented 011 the board, and also in regard to repl'esentation 011 tho Harbour Board. The engineer reported that the last pipe in connection.with the eastern drainage had been laid. A man-hole had stiil lo bo constructed, and the street straightened lip. The cost of the street so far had been JM3 Cs. Bd. In Aliectown the twelveinch drain in Cuba Street had been linked up with that in Victoria Street, and rlie sumps were being finished oil'.' .The. Graceiield Head Culvert had been completed, the total cost amounting to .Utll Is. .'ld. Tho kerbing and channelling in White's Line had been completed, but a little metalling had still to be done.' The total cost amounted to .11120 18s. Id.—The report was adopted. it was decided to leave the i|iioslioti <if a grant to a borough employee, who recently met with an accident, in the hands'of the Mayor, with power to act.
Sir Oliver Lodge, l.v a decision of Hie Council, which remains to be ratified, has been nomin'jfed president of the British Association, in place of the late Sir \V. U. White.
