SENTENCE OF FIVE YEARS.
FOR SHOOTING AT CHINESE CONSUL. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. April 28, 10.55 p.m.) Melbourne, April 28. T. J. Chia, who last month shot at Mr. Young Liang Hwang, Chinese ConsulGeneral, was sentenced in, the Supreme Court to five years' imprisonment with hard labour. [Chia had pleaded not guilty of wounding with intent to murder, but guilty of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm, a plea which the prosecution accepted. Chia was formerly of the Chinese Consular staff, and after his discharge expressed an intention of returning to China. He was annoyed at not obtaining introductions to Ministers from Mr. Hwang, and when asked to leave tho Consul's offico after an interview, lie commenced shooting. Subsequently Cilia declared that ho intended to kill Hwang because he had abused him, and then kill himself.]
