PUBLIC NOTICES., I WELLINGTON lIAEBOUR BOARD. ELECTION OF A MEMBER BY THE PAYERS Of HARBOUR DUES, ' OTHER THAN DUES ON SHIPS., TO THE IMPORTERS OF WELLINGTON AND REPRESENTATIVES OF SAME. DEAR SIRS,—In soliciting your support I would take this opportunity of directing your attention to tho fact that I am purely an Importers' Candidate. If elected I intend to call two meetings of Importers each year in the Chamber of Commerce, when I shall be pleased to hear your 'views, and should necessity arise I' will ventilate sarno at the Board meetings. Trusting you will at least return a direct importers' candidate and not add to the shipping interests, which already have two direct representatives, I hope you will not forget THE IMPORTERS' CANDIDATE, ARTHUR D. KENNEDY. AND-DON'T BE "BULLDOZED." To the Editor of Tire Dominion', Sir,—ln .reply to my opponent's champion (Mr Hubert L. Nathan) in your issue' of this morning, I would thank him for making Mr Harkness's position clear to payers of dues other than payers (< of dues 011 ships, wherein he says: " I would liko to point out that the member representing this seat is there in the joint interests of tho IMPORTERS and EXPORTERS, and I sincerely hope that the EXPORTERS will take special note of Mr Kennedy's advertisement, wiiereiii he distinctly points out that he is purely an IMPORTERS' CANDIDATE. Regarding Mr Nathan's offer to give i£lo to the Wellington Hospital if I can disprove his allegation that Mr Harkness (tho nominee of tho National Dairy Association, and whose name even does not appear 011 the Voters' List) imports more in one ship than I would import in twelve months, I, too, will give another «£lO to the same institution if Mr Nathan will disclose the "Paul Pry" methods by which he obtains the desired comparison of imports ns between • the .National Dairy Association and the firm: of A. D. Kennedy and Co., 1 Ltd. For "hitting below the belt," as ho terms it, this is in a street by itself. ' t According to the New Zealand Post Office Directory, Mr Hubert L. Nathan is located as the shipping manager of Bannatyne and Co., which should put him somewhat "out of bounds" as being tho best exponent of who should, or should not. represent the importers; and, furthermore, silence him (in his free and printed disclosure of the private importation of his and other shipping firm s clients. His disclosure of my firm's importance in the shipping world is, to sa.v tlie least, in very bad taste, and would not for a moment bo tolerated in banking, circles, or any business concern in this or any other city in,tho commercial world. \ Sir, —If this is a sample of what MiNathan is prepared -to do in a private capacity, what will lie not do as a member of the Harbour Board, if elected ono of the shipping representatives for which 110 seeks election? To kill my.candidature ho thus "stoops to conquer." Two years ago be opposed Mr Harkness, which proves conclusively then, as now, he was at heart a shinning nominee. As to' the EXPORTERS from port to port, and even, if needs be. exporters of the staple products such as butter, cheese, wool, bides, tallow, etc., I am confident that they (having two direct shipping representatives) are prepared to judge my candidature on merit, and will support ine wherein I have declared myself in plain terms to be the IMPORTEES' CANDIDATE, if only for the reason jliat I am just as likely to "give their side "a square deal" as the other. Now, Sir, wherein have I offended? Mr Nathan proves conclusively that I am on importers' representative—as I advertised, and wish lit to be known'. Further, that Mr Harkness represents both exporters and importers. In this respect he carries top weight and penalty, as the race is for J,lmporters, only, with a <£-0 Hospital; Stakes thrown in. ; . . '

As : to Mr Hubert Nathan's anxiety 111 the whole matter, X challenge him, in turn, to prove that he is NOT tlio shinBins manager of his firm, and, as such, NOT without bias in tlia direction my advertisement indicated —that of securing at all costs an additional shipping representative on the Harbour Board at the expense of the direct vote of the iuiporters. . , In conclusion, I have not, or ever had, the slightest personal antagonism towards my opponent, Mr Harkness, and trust that he will' quickly, acknowledge same, and set at rest the disturbed, state of public opinion wherein he is now, more than ever, -dubbed_ the exporters' and shipping preresentativo :moro than the importers' friend. Yours faithfully, ARTHUR D. KENNEDY, The Importers' Candidate. Wellington. 28tli April, 1913. WELLINGTON HARBOUR BOARD. To the Electors of Wellington.
