"FISHY" WATER.
WIIAT TIIE CITY ENGINEER SAYS. Numerous complaints are being niado as to tlio quality of,tlio water at present being supplied to the city from the Wainui mains. Jt has a distinctly "fishy" smell, which is accentuated by boiling, and is the reverse of pleasant to the palate. The City Engineer (Mr. W. 11. Morton), who has been bothered a good deal by the complaints referred to, lias explained that the trouble arises from (ho. pressure m the. waler of algae, the generic term for a minute form of vegetable life, not unusually found in bodies of stored water. The disturbing element; is said to be quito harmless, and should disappear after tho first heavy fall of rain. llr. Morton states that if nnyono has any scruples about drinking tlio'water ill its present condition, it may, 011 being decanted, be clarified by dropping in tlio decanter or jug a small piece of alum, which will almost immediately cause a slight sediment to form at the'bottom of Ihe receptacle. Citizens residing 011 the higher levels westward of the city, whose water supply conies from Karori, have not beon troubled iu any way.
