THE "WHEREAS" PARTY.
Sir,—l would like to inquire through tho medium ' of, .your valuable paper whether" there are 10,000 lawyers in the city of Wellington. - My-reason for so doing is in consequence of receiving a municipal ejection sheet setting out some personal history of twelve candidates, four of whom aro staled to be lawyers. I am isvited' to -vote for this ticket in order that 'all classes and interests may be fairly represented,' which, with your guidance, is niy intention. There are approximately 35,000 voters on tho roll, and in order to truthfully' carry out the wish expressed in tho.circular tnere would require to be 10,000 lawyers''in 'tho city, as the proportion of votes to return a cancli- . date is about 2500. The.last roll-call of Mhe Law Society stated tho number at gome hundreds, which entitles the lawyers only to tho limb of a representative, so probably all tho alleged farm labourers and domestic seryants said to have been imported by tho Massey Government have really been disguised lawyers, otherwise, whoro could the quota necessary to return fouv members to the council nave sprung from ? There is a veiy euphonious phrase at the head of the circular—"Ono aim, the city; one class, the citizens" — which ivonltl requiro some little revision if the number of lawyers in Wellington were only some hundreds as before, nnd as a mere layman might I suggest some such variation as the following:—"Ono aim, advertisement; ono class, the lawyers; no class, tile rest of tho community."—l am, etc., DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
