HOCKEY.
TBT, "Buily-OFF,"]
PEEP AT THE COMING YEAR, As Bright as a Now Penny. Saturday next, May S, will see the opening of llio hockoy competitions, and tho prospects lor a successful season's sport arts, us bright as t'iio proverbial now penny. Tho year just closcil lias proved a fruitful one, inasmuch as the association has acquired Uig leaso. of Karoi'i Park for a period of ten years, and also the Hutt Park for tho samo time. No tnoro hockey will b 0 played at Day's Day, and, although 'thero are bouio who will miss tho littlo trips across, and tho old familiar strains of "Antonio" from tho poor old harpist, it is nevertheless recognised that a good niovo has been made. Last year tlio association paid ,£9O for ground-rent to the Terries Company, and considerably over .£IOO must havo been paid in fares by hockey players and enthusiasts during tho year. On tho whole, the leaso of Karori Park spells good business. Tho grounds thero aro excellent, and this afternoon tlio season will be opened with a soven-a-sido tournament and general;sports. With regard to ■ tlio Hutt Park, it ik regrettable that a ground nearer home | could not havo boon secured, but all recogniso that half a loaf is better than no bread, so players must bo content. Tho grounds out there aro a littlo backward, but, ero the season opens, wo hope to hove at least four gootl playing fields. The Association's Funds. Tho finances of the association aro in a sound position; ,£IOO is on deposit, and sundry cash brings the assets up to £120, while outstanding accounts only total ss. Tho association also still holds tlio shield and this in itself is a financial asset. Some Familiar Faces Missing, As to tho playing strength of the representative team, it is yet early to predict with any accuracy, but several good men of last year's combination will bo missing. Loader, tho brilliant forward, has gone to Sydney, Baker,' our best fullback, is away. , Campbell, tho crack centre-half, has retired, wliilo R. Thompson, ono of our best halfs, will be out of town most of tho time. Dwvcr (goalkeeper) has retired 'from tho game. But we look forward and not Lack, and while wo regret tho absence of these players, surely, from amongst our young blood, wo can pick' worthy successors to our old friends. Next week will be en'tircly devoted to olub matters and training. Association's Annual Report. The fourteenth annual report of the Wellington Hockey Association indicates that there are now fourteen clubs, comprising 553 players, affiliated. Besido this, the Wednesday Association has a membership of 110. Tlio report also gives the exact performances of all teams in 1912. For some roason or other these wero unobtainable last year. They aro as follow.
