OTAKI. A piece of "stuff," resembling in appearance a valuable piece of ambergris, bath in colour and smell, was picked up a day or so ago 'at the mouth of the river on the Otaki beach. It was Lauded to JJ!r. St. Georgo for analysis, who found it. was a conglomeration of mixtures, being largely comprised of gum. The finder is naturally disappointed, as he fully eV.pected to secure a good amount for it. ■ Mr. J. R. Stansell, senior, who is floating a company for erecting a public hall at Shannon, reports that he is meeting with success, and considers the enterprise will soon assume more definite shape. He states that he'has received over 1000 applications for shares. A number of now books, mostly fiction, have been added to the Otaki Public Library. CARTERTON. , The ahnnnl meeting of the Carberton branch of the Now -Zealand Fanners' Union was held on Thursday, when Mr. 11. R. Bunny was elected to represent tin; branch at the annual conference to be held in Masferton next mouth. Mosst's. 11. 1!. Bunnv, W. Fisher, W. Howard Booth, K. lia"lo" jun.. C. lieid, and T. V. Mr Georgo West, of Dalcfield, had the misfortune to severely fracture his arm on Wednesday.
