TUBERCULOUS MILK

ALARM IN CHRISTCHURCH. 'By Telegraph.—Pica» Christchurch, April 24, statements mado at tho mooting of thd Hospital Board yesterday in .regard to tho condition of the dairy herds that supply inilk to tho board s' iustitutiona were discussed in tho citv to-day, and •some alarm was created. The board decided to call tho attention of tlio City Couucil t<> f tho gravity of tlio position, and urged it to tako steps to ensure that milk vended in tho city is supplied from tested cows only. When tho Mayor was seen in regard to this to-day, ho said that tho information placed beforo tho board revealed a very unsatisfactory and even alarming state of auairs. It was evident that the City Couucil would havo to do something, but ho could not at tho moment say if tho council would lx? able to establish a municipal milk supply without ' going through tho formalities of raising a loan. Ho was of opinion, however, that it could bo done under the Public Health Act. The Hon. R. H. Rhodes, Minister for Public Health, when he passed through Christchurch this" morning, on his way to Duuedin, sent the following telegram to tho Mayor from Oamaru:—"ln view of tlio discussion at.the meeting of tho Hospital Board yesterday about tho Christchurch milk supply, I will, if you think it desirable, endeavour to arrange with Dr. Champtaloup to deliver an illustrated public lecture in Christchurch at an early date on milk and diseases incidental' thereto. Tho doctor is the bacteriologist at tho Otago University, and lis specially fitted to deal with tlio subject in a popular manner." The Mayor feels that Dr. Champtaloup's lecture will allay any alarm ,fhat might bo created, nnd will show that there is not as much danger na some people might anticipate, and ho lias replied stating that ho will bo pleased to acoept tho Minister's offer.
