HOSPITAL COST
WILL TEE HATES. GO UP? : Tho big increase in tho cost this year of hospital and charitable aid administration i in Wellington lias caused serious alarm in several of the affected boroughs concerned, and something in tho form of protest is to bo made to the incoming board (to be elected on Wednesday). Tho amount levied on the City Council last year was ,£10,(!"8; this year it has gone up to JJl3,G23—a jump of ,£294s—which must 1m collected in the form of rates.
The Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren) was approached yesterday by a Dominion* reporter, and asked if. the. increase in tlio levy would mean an increase in tho rates. Tho Mayor stated that ho had not looked into the'matter, but .would .go into the figures with the Town ClGrk. Ho thought the.v would bo able to "squeeze through" without an increase in the rates this year.
