YESTERDAY'S MEETINGS.
THE MAYORALTY. MR. LUKE AT KILBIRNIE. Mr. J. P. Luke addressed a meeting of 40 people in the churchroom, Moxham Avenue, Kilbirnie. last evening. Mr. F. AV. Fielder' presided. Mr. Luke referred to Mr. M'Larcn's statement that a city loan of XIOO.COO was maturing this year, and provision was beim? made to liquidate .£25,000 of it on'i of sinking fund. Mr. M'Laren, ho said, must lx> unaware of tho true position of the city loans. As a matter ot faot, the only loan falling due previously to 1320 was the loan raised in 1001, having a currency of ten years, and falling due in May, 19U. The sinking fund associated with this loan would amount -to iiOOO, and tho balance of .£0,8,000 niusrfc either bo renewed, or redeemed by a fresh loan. As an alternative, it could bo reduced by the sinking funds accumulated on other loans. Tho latter proposal would have his support if he were clected to tho position of Mayor. He dealt exhaustively with tho question of milk supply, and tho spread of tuberculosis by the milk from infectcd cattle. He thought tho dairy herds from which milk was supplied to tho city should be carefully inspected at frequent intervals, and cattle at all affceted should bo destroyed. 110 promised, if clected, to bring the matter of milk supplv before the council with the object of having certain very neccssary measures -taken to protect tho community against tho Ecnurgo of tuberculosis. Mr. Luke stated that he hud always urged tho claims of Evans Bay as a great centre for industrial and commercial development. He was still optimistic, and he believed many industries would yet'be established on tho foreshore. As I to tho reclamation for a recreation ' ground, ho believed the ground could bo extended and made the largest and, after tho completion of tho proposed traflie tunnel, tho most easily readied playing area near tho city. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried unanimously, on the motion of Mr. T. Carrick, seconded by Mr. Julius Lainbrg. THE ASSOCIATION TICKET. MEETING AT BROOKLYN. HOSPITAL LEVY AND CITY LEASES. A number of candidates on the ticket of the Wellington Municipal Electors' Association hold a meeting in the Masonic Hall at Brooklyn last evening. Councillor G. Frost presided over an attendanco of between thirty and forty' electors. Messrs. Buddie, Luckie, llislop, Thompson, and the chairman in turn addressed tile meeting. Jlr. Huddle said that lie was not standing in the interests of any one class, but as tho representative of the citizens generally. He dealt with sovoral matters covered by him iu -his previous addresses.
In referring to proposed extensions of the twin system, and (he proposed tunnel through Mount Victoria, lie explained that while fully recognising their utility and necessity, yet they are question's that must bo considered by the electors in the light of tho city's finances, and .should not be taken in hand until the finances warranted it.
Mr. Luckie, in tho course of hi 3 address, referred to vnrious mailers of interest to the citizens, and urged that tho tramways and electric light and power undertakings of the council should be conducted 011 a sound financial basis, that so soon as they showed a permanent profit the question of reduction in fares and cost of lighting and power should at once be taken into consideration. Ho also advocated the establishment of public reading rooms and libraries in all the outlying portions of the city, and urged that all the suburban areas should be equipped with efficient lire stations, 'the candidate deprecated tho introduction of party politics in the council, and claimed that all councillors should have only one object in view—the sound financial condition of the city's undertakings and tho general improvement of tho city. Mr. Hislop spoko generally on tho lines of his previous address. lio remarked that he was 0110 of the youngest candidates standing, and said that liis object was to assist as far as possible in the management of local affairs.
Mr. Thompson said that one of the Labour candidates had stated that an attempt would bo m(ule to give reclaimed land leaseholders! the freehold. This was absurd. Ho was not iu favour of giving the freehold to any reclaimed land leaseholder.
Councillor Frost said .that the tramway system must be kept always in a strong financial position. It was not advisable, when a little profit had been made, to reduce the fares. There was always a risk that « serious accident might occur, which would involve the city in a heavy" claim for compensation. The Vogeltown Road was too steep, and the grade should bo eased. More recreation grounds were needed- in tho south-west-ern portion of the city. He had taken a leading part in advocating the creation of a new reserve in Nairn Street. Steps should bs taken to promote a Bill in Parliament to enablo tho council to tako over the private streets in Brooklyn. It was essential ' that tho Brooklyn tramline ehould.be duplicated, and the council should consider tho question of providing cheap power for industries. A number of tramway extensions were necessary —one lip Roxburgh Street, a second over Constable Street, and a third at Vogeltown. Ho was in favour of tepid baths in tho outlying districts as well as iu the city.
A" question addressed +0 the candidate was, "Will yon keep inviolnto tho principle of the Glasgow leases?" All the candidates answered in tho affirmative.
At the conclusion of tho meeting' tho candidates were accorded a vote <.f thanks.
