According to figures supplied by Mr. John Vale, Victoria's drinking bill for 1912 totalled .£5,151,215, or Xt 16s. Id. per head of the population, which is 2s. Gd. per head higher than in 1911, and tho highest since. 1901. The statistician attributes the increase in the money expended on drink per head of population to the geiieral prosperity of the people, and tho long hours the publicans are allowed to keep their bars open, compared with, tlio hours j observed iu other trades. ;
