MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Spcolal Correspondent.) Mastertori, April 21. Messrs. G. \V. Sellar and Jlarley Donald have intimated their intention'of becoming candidates for scats on tho Masterton Borough Council. It is understood that Messrs. Sellar, Donald, Lamb, Kembail, King, and Winzenbetg, none of whom have previously taken part in municipal aflairs, but all ol' whom are young business men of the town, will run as a "ticket." It is probable that there will bo twelve or fourteen candidates for thoj nine seats. So far, no one has himself as a candidate for the Mayoralty iii opposition to Mr. J. M. Coradiiie.
At the annual meeting of the Mosterton Gun Club a satisfactory -report was presented, and the balance-sheet 1 showed a credit of .£136 ss. 9d. Mr. ]{. liuick was clccted president _for tho ensuing year, with Mr.R. J. King secretary and treasurer. The olub has at present thirtythree active members. It was decided that during the season a sum of JS4O bo allotted to eight club shoots, for members, a sum of £o being allotted to. each match. It was resolved that tho season be opened on May 8, and that competitions be held overy fortnight, on Thursdays and Saturdays alternately. Tho club intends holding two .£SO clay-bird matches, and one .£IOO live-bird match during tlio season. Mr. William J. M'Grandale, who died suddenly at Wellington on Sunday, was a well-known drover of this district.
Twenty-five new members were elected at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society held on Saturday. Tho eociety passed a vote of thanks to the committee of tho Carterton branch for tho manner in which they had carried out the arrangements in connection with tho recent sports meeting. It wa.s decided that nominations of officers for tho ensuing year should eloso on Thursday next. Tho appointment of.a committer to draft bvlaws for tho various branches was held over until after tho annual meeting. The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club flew a Derby raco from Napier on Saturday last, the first bird to "homo" being Mr. 11. M. Wilton's Such a Shine.
Tha Wairarapa branches of the New Zealand Farmers' Union liavo now an aggregate membership of 380. The annual meetings of branches are being held this week, and a big conference takes, place in Masterton next month. The Prime Minister has been invited to bo present' at a banquet, which'will bo held in connection with this banquet. A.large number of men mro at present engaged rabbit-killing in the Wairarapa. This is no doubt duo to tho laigh pnoo offering for skins. It is stated that one or two members of the syndicate which purchased tho old show ground from the Masterton A. and P. Association liavo expressed their willingness to present the grounds to the borough as an athletic domain. . Tho Wairarapa championship Eugby football matches will commence in a fortnight's time.
