LESS WHEAT AND WHY. Tlmaru, April 20. Mr. J. Talbot, chairman of tho Tiraaru Branch of tho Farmers' Union, in his annual statement, put tho averago wheat yield for this district at not more thai: 22 to 21 bushels per acre, and tho total not more than two-thirds of last year. Other branches of farming wcro satisfac. tory. He considers it probablo that wheat-growing would bo largely given, up owing (1) to tho cost of labour, and' tho difficulty of petting it harvested in,, time! (2) low prices, which were kept ■ down by possible Australasian imports under a low tariff; (3) high wheat freight? to Britain; (4) tho .working of the Do. fenco Act in taking men away to camp, leaving teams idle. PRISONER'S JUMP 4 RESULT. Auckland, April 19. -Joseph Gibbie, who had been arrested on a charge of drunkenness, after a determined resistance was placed in a motor-ear. While being carried to the police station ho attempted to jump from tho car. Tho constablo seized his arm. and GibbiVs leg caught in a wheel and was broken. Gibbio was removed to tho hospital.
