A fire at Capo Foulwmii between 5 and 0 o'clock this morning destroyed a hotel owned by Mr. Cosleuo, and occupicd by Mrs. Monigatti, and a tea room, store, and billiard room, owned and occupied by' Mrg.'Jlarnety. Both were practically now buildings, being crccted only thrco or tour years ago. It was with dilliculty that an ' extension of the firo was prevented. A • hall adjoining Harncty's store caught, but the liro was extinguished before much ■ > damage had been done, and Miss 01unon'» - ' store, which is also the post office (adjoining the hotel), also had a narrow, escape. Practically nothing was saved.' Tlie fire appears to have begun in Hqn liety's, as u.pilo of coal is still alight ill dangerous proximity to tho hall, Tho Westport Kro Brigade went out by. train this afternoon, taking a quantity! of water with them, owing to tho local' supply having run out, and have now* got the fire completely under control. ' A serious attack upon a woman by her, brother is reported to havo occurred at' Akaroa to-day, but details of tho affair aro at present very meagre.
