HARES AND HOUNDS.
All things considered, Saturday's outing. of the Brooklyn Harriers was a very satisfactory one. Twcuty-eight members turned out to a very beneficial run from Thorndon Baths. The hares (Messrs. Shaw and Oliver) trailed a course from the starting-point to Goldics Brae into Wadestown. Then tho'lCaiwarra Stream was followed for about half a mile. A turn was taken into Ngaio and round the surrounding hills and back to the start-ing-point, via the Kaiwarra Gorge and the Esplanade. F. Warmingtoii acted as whipper-in, while the club captain made the pace. A handicap run-in was held over the last GOO yards, which resulted in a promising runner—.T. Salmond—just beating P. Coffey for first place, by a narrow margin with L. Brow a good third.
The weekly run of the Wellington Tlarriers took place 011 Saturday from Island Bay. Molar cycle sports and military training affected the attendance somewhat, but left the club with a. fair attendance of seventeen. The trail, which was laid by W. Press and A. A. Hyde, led from Cliff House in an easterly direction over the hills into Houghton Bay. Turning north, a portion- of the valley was traversed, and then the second range of hills was crossed at a point a little to the south of the Lyall Bay beach. . From this point the trail led along the beach to the sand dunc-s at the eastern end, and from there to the golf links. Advantage was then taken of the Hat country, and the trail-layers set a northerly course almost lo the gasometer. Here they turned west, and crossed tho hills into Evans Bay by the old Miramar Road. Itere a course was shaped across the South Kilbirnie flat to the Maranui School, and from this point the hills were again crossed, the trail being laid in a south-westerly direction, and "coming out 011 to the road at tho south end of tic Duppa Street reserve. Two packs were dispatched. The first pock, in charge of T. Farrington, gave the hares ten minutes' start. B. llately and S. Bevans acted as pacemakers, and kept the pack moving at a fair pace. After ten minutes' grace, the second pock departed, with C. Turnbull as pacemaker. Owing to the first contingent not following the trail when in the vicinity of Maranui School, the two packs did not meet, although the second got within shouting distance of the hares. This unfortunate mistake-resulted in the run-in being abandoned. On this occnsion it would have been an exciting, contest, us some of (lie new members are beginning t»i show form, but honours would' probably have fallen to the same men as last week, though perhaps not in the same ui-ilitr. Xe.xt Saturday the club will run from Brooklyn.
