THE PUBLIC SERVICE.
SUPERANNUATION BOARD. The quarterly meeting of the Public Service Superannuation Board was held on Thursday last.
Leave of" absence was granted Mr. Bishop, a member of the board, on account of ill-health.
Tho positiom of a messenger who had been in chargo of tlio iiro brigado appliances in the Government Buildings for ninny years past was considered, and it was decided that the salary granted him for such services should bo allowed for superannuation purposes. An opinion from tlio Crown Law Officers was considered by the board, as to tho position ol' an officer who had been retired medically unlit, and who was willing to forego his retiring allowance owing to his health being improved, but not sufficiently so to allow him to resume his official duties. It was decided to refer tho case to tho Public Service Commissioner to sse if suitable outdoor employment could ba found for him.' . Tho question of the rate of interest allowed by the Public Trust Offico on superannuation money in the common fund of that oftice was referred to a committee to inquire into the matter. Tlio board considered the question of tho dates fixed by tho regulations for tho meetings of tlio Ixnird, und tlio matter was left in tho hands of the Inquiry Committee to deal with and report to the board at its next meeting. The draft annual report and balancesheet was laid before tho board, and tho report was approved, subject to certain minor alterations. Tho secretary informed tho board that the amount in the hands of tho Public Trustee to tlio credit of the fund on March 31, 1913, was .£487,507 Bs. lid., an increaso for the year of ,£114,251 9s. The report of tho Claims Committee on oertain officers to bo retired as medically unfit was considered, and of tlicso, some were granted unconditionally and others on further examination being reported to the board.
It was further, resolved, on tho rocomnlendation of the committee, that statutory power should be obtained to require tho Public Servico Commissioner to find suitable employment for persons to whom retiring allowances have been granted under Section 3G of the principal Act, and who liavo been reported under Section ,44 nf the Amendment Act, 1908, as medically fit to undertake such employment/in tho I'iiblic Service. The totals of retiring allowances and annuities to widows and children, passed bv tho board, are as follow-.-Ordinary, A ; 1739 18s.; medically unfit, .£203 55.; 13 widows and 19 children, £181. Total, £2121 3s.
