ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
A SUDDEN DEATH. ; A man named "William" Jamo.s M'Grnn:dle, a shepherd, until recently resident at ■;Maslertbn, died suddenly at the residence of his'brother-in-law, Mr. Albert Hawes, in Constable Street yesterday. It is presumed that llin cause of death was consumption, us M'Grandle had suffered from this disease for some years. Two days ago he became very ill, and was confined to his room, hut no doctor was summoned. It is not certain yet whether an inquest, will he considered necessary; •Hip DEATII OF lilt. E. W. BROAD. (By Telegraph,—Pros) Association.) Marton, April 19. The funeral of the late Mr. E. W. I!r<md Has largely attended. At tho inquest, a verdict "(hat deceased died on April 17 from injuries sustained whilst motor-cycling, ha being struck by tho New Plymouth express on April 1C was returned. In the opinion of tho jury 110 blame was attachable to anyone, but they added ii rider to tho effect' that, in view of tho increased motor and general traffic on'the AVellington'road, strong recommendations 1m made to tho Department to take immediate steps to minimise the 'danger at the crossing. SHUNTER KILLED. Christchurch, April 20. John Poppelwell, a shunter at Mina Railway Station, near Cheviot, between ■17 and years of age, whilst engaged in shunting operations yesterday afternoon, was knocked down by a. truck, which) passed over his left arm and leg, almost severing them from-the body. Ho was brought to town and taken to hospital at 7.30 p.m. in a collapsed state. Soon afterwards he became 'uuconscious, and at 9.15 p.m. An inquest was opened to-day, when evidence as to identification and tho nature of tho injuries was taken. The Coroner, in adjourning the inquest till Wednesday, drew the attention of tho representative of the llailway Department that the fact that deceased was represented by counsel indicat<\i that an attitude adverse to the K>oparlment would bo probably taken up. ' A BAKER'S DEATH. Christchurch, April 20. Richard .John Sunderland, a baker, (18 years of age, who was taken to the Hospital on April 9, suffering from injuries received by falling off a eart, died to-day. At tho inquest, opened this afternoon, tho evidence of the junior house-surgeon was to tho effect that when admitted Sunderland was suffering from a fracture of tho base of the skull, and also was found to havo heart disease. Ho remained in a semiconscious state till three days ago, when ■lie began to sink. Death was due to heart disease, accelerated by the injuries received. Tho inquest was then adjourned till to-morrow. STOREKEEPER TAKES LYSOL. Auckland, April.2o. _ A storekeeper, of Onehunga, named William Neira Chase, committed suicide yesterday, by taking lysol. Upon going to a shed in tho l.ackyard, Mrs. Cliaso was horrified to find Iter husband staggering about. Noticing a strong smell of lysol,' she said: "Surely you have not poisoned yourself?" Mr. Chase replied: "I did it for your sake. I nm done." Ho died almost immediately.
OCTOGENARIAN'S DEATH. Auckland, April 19. Bernard M'Caffrey, aged eighty, died in the hospital ag the result of a fall into the cellar of the Thames Hotel. BODY AND LYSOL BOTTLE. Auckland, April 20. The body of a middle-aged man, as yet unidentified, was found tliis morning on the ecetion of the new Y.M.C.A. buildings. which is not yet occupied. A lysol bottle and a glass were lying besido .the body. ■
