SWOOP ON BETTING.
WHOLESALE CHARGES. PUBLICANS. BOOKMAKERS AND BARMEN. A big swoop on people alleged to have been concerned in illegal betting was mado in Wellington recently under the direction of Detective-Sergeant J. J. Cassclls, of Mount Cook Station. As a result tho police aro. proceeding against a number of bookmakers, two hotel licensees, and two hotel barmen. -'Six informations have been laid against one barman on charges of betting on licensed premises, and ono information has been laid against the other barman on a similar allegation. One publican has been served with cicht informations and the other with six informations for (allegedly) having permitted and connived at betting on licensed premises. The bookmakers aro charged with street betting, betting on licensed promises, and betting in public places. The swoop took place during the days of the recent Wellington and the recent Manawatu Racing Clubs' meetings. The informations are laid bv DetectivoSergeant Cassells. -
