8 (From Our Special Correspondent.) THE LATE MR. E. W. BROAD, Masterton, April 18 Mr. E. W..Broad, whose death as tho result of an • accident is reported from Marton. was at one time a popular resident of Masterton, being employed on tho staff of the local branch of tho Bank of Australasia. Ho was an enthusiastic sport, and took a keen interest in football and lawn tenuis. Ho was a son of the late Judge Broad, of Nelson, and married ,the only daughter of Mr. F. Moore, formerly owner of Glehburne Station, but now of 'Wanganui. In .consequence of a resolution passed at the annual meeting of tho Wairarapa Hockey Association,, tho Post and Telegraph Hockey Club havo decided to withl draw from tho association. They will not, | therefore, enter a team in this year's competitions.

j Deer are numerous in: tho Masterton district this season.. A well-developed stag was seen in tho neighbourhood of the Opaki racecourse yesterday. It had evidently come down from the hills to tho west of tho town. A very successful, garden party was held in the grounds of Mrs. J. Rayner, , in Cornwall Street, yesterday afternoon. The proceeds are to be devoted to the funds of the Congregational Church Boys' Club. , ' , ' Mr. Edward Praguell, of this town, received word yesterday that his son Percy, who was at the Territorial 'camp at Oringi, had > contracted pneumonia, and had been admitted, to tho Dannevirk'e Hospital. Mr. A. E. Winzenberg has decided to becoino. a candidate for, a seat on tho Masterton Borough Council. The election this year. promises to bo very keenly fought. Mr. 0. N. C. Pragnell presided at the annual meeting of the Masterton Miniature Eiflo Club, which was held last evening. The and balance-sheet, which showed a slight credit balance, were adopted. Mr. O. Pragnell was elected president, and Mr. J. Murray secretary and treasurer. It was decided that during the coming ssason a half-inch bull's-eye be used, instead of one-inch as formerly.. Tho executive committee was instructed to arrange for fortnightly competitions. Tho Masterton Homing Pigeon Club flew an interval race from Wellington yesterday. The winning bird whs Drake Bros.' Intention, which did" the distanco in lhr. 33min. The weather was unfavourable. I

Tho annual meeting of the Masterton Beautifying Socioty was held last evening, Mr. F. W. Temple presiding. The chairman stated that, owing ,to lack of interest on tho part of townspeople, the society had ended the year with a debit balance. A set of by-laws drafted by the secretary were adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —Vice-president, Mr. F. W. Temple,-com-mittee, Messrs. J. Hunter, W. H. Jackson, W. L. Falconer, W. Chrystall, and A. Henderson. It was decided that Mesdames Coradine, H. T.' Wood, W. B. Chennells, G. W. Sellar. and R.' O. Smith bo asked to act as a ladies' committee. Messrs. W. L. Falconer and A. Henderson were appointed a committee to canvass tho town for subscriptions. It was decided to ask the Borough Council for financial assistance. Martin Kerins was fined 40s. and costs in the Magistrate's Court this morning for using certain language in a railway cartiago between Masterton and Carterton. Several charges under tho Licensing Act were heard in tho Magistrate's Court to-day. R. H. Crocker was fined 40s. and costs for having delivered at Me Queen's Hotel liquor which ho liad grounds to suspect was intended for sale. Bertram Thomas Chnllis was convicted and discharged for having sold liquor intended for Masterton on an order from R. H. Crocker, without notifying the Clerk of the Court of such sale. For selling liquor intended for Masterton on an order from Mr. Rea. without notifying tho Clerk of tho Court; tho same defendant was fined 20s. and costs. Decision was reserved in a case in which Samuel Allan was charged with kcepin" liquor-for sale. Thomas Flaws was fined 20s. and costs on each of two charges of having given orders for liquor for Masterton on account of other persons, and failing to supply the vendor with a written statement of tho names and addresses of such persons. For driving a motor-car over a crossing at. a greater speed than six miles an hour, Charles Savage was to-day fined °0s and 7s. costs. The same defendant was lined 40s. and costs for driving a motorcar without lights. Tho solicitor to tho Masterton Retailers' Association has written the Borough Council, protesting against a poll beiii" taken on the half-holiday question, oil 'the ground that- the petition demanding the poll is invalid. William St. Lqger and Nellie St. Legcr, formerly of Porirua, were to-day adjudil cated bankrupt. V J At a meeting of the ground committee of the Masterton A. and P.
