Although frequently referred (o as tho Scotch tenor, tho Into Mr. Barton M'Guekin was essentially Irish, having been born in Dublin in lS5:i. In temperament ho wns Irish-warm, impulsive, and highly dramatic, ami m somo i.f tho older operas by Balle, Wallace, Verdi, and Donzetli he was considered very fine indeed. For many years ho toured the United Kingdom as the principal tenor in (lie Carl Rosa Opera Company, and had the distinction of singing before tho Info Queen Victoria in "Era Diavolo." Ho was also known professionally in America and Australia, but never camo to New Zealand, lie has sung many times at Covcnt harden m Wagnerian and other roles, ami has appeared in oratorio in manv of the musical centres in England. Ho acted as conductor and director of music al tho International lri.,h lixhildlion in 11107.
