The funeral of the Maori chief Arn!S'i Wl i° 1 d ¥ at N S"t««-era on Friday week last, took place this week at tho Waitotara Native cemetery. At the tanni during the night before tho funeral a few of the nearest relations sat by, and kept a last vigil over their respected chieftain. 1 rominent among these watchers were tour who had seen the Hau'Hnu warveterans with whom deceased had been closely associated through a long pctiod of active service. The large cortege which followed to the cemetery was evidonco of the respect and esteem in which the deceased hcadrann of the Ngatipnrua Aratawas tribe was held bv his people. The Rev.. J. G. Hughes,'D.D., has accepted the call to the Berhampore Baptist Church, and will commence his duties in May. ■ i A very well-known resident of Christchurch, Mr. Thomas Gapes, died there,on' Wednesday last, aged sixty-five years. Deceased, who had been a member of the Christchurch Citv Council since- 1891, and was- Mayor in 189-1, was born in London in 1818, and came to Now Zealand with his parents in 1859 By the ship Kcgina After leaving school ho was associated with his lather in a painting and paperhanging business, Which he took over altogether in 18S9. Mr. Gapes.inaugurated the Now Zealand Order of Foresters' Guarantee Association, which has been very successful. Ho was the first member of tho Conciliation Board appointed by the Government under the Arbitration and Conciliation Act of 1891. ■■ Mr. W. H. Cook, formerly town celrk at Petone, has resigned his position as engineer and town clerk at Hastings (states our correspondent). Mr. Cook intends 1 entering into business in Hastings as a civil engineer and surveyor. Pastor William White, of the Baptist Church at Launcestou, died last wei.'k, aged 85 years. During his pastorate he celebrated over 1100 marriages. The Rev. Joseph : Hancock, who celebrated his 91st birthday on February Id last, and who was the oldest Methodist minister in South Australia, died last iveck.Mr. C. M. Banks, who has been hou. secretory of the Wellington Automobile Club since its inception, is unable to continue his duties! At a meeting of motorists last night ho was thanked for his services. Mr. C. H. Izard and Dr. Piendergast Knight both paid high tributes to the work done by Mr. Banks in the interests.of the motor fraternity. .Mr. Izard declared that it was certainly no fault of Mr. Banks's that the old association had not been a more active body during tho ptst few years. Mr. W. Wilson, of ' Messrs. Georgo Thomas and Co., who has been in indifferent health for some months past, is again confined to his home. 1 Constable Charles Stuart lias been appointed Clerk of tho Magistrate's Court lit Takaka, in place \of Constablo J. Bheary, transferred. Tho following appointments are gazetted:—Tho Rev. Mother Mary St. Denis, Manager of St. Mary's Industrial School at Nelson; the Rev. \V. J. Ornuind, Manager of St. ■ Marys'lfidustrial School, »t Auckland. Constables D. J. H. Buick and C. H. Lcnuon have been appointed factory in-. Bpectors. ... Mr. G. Cruickshank, S.M., has been appointed a Visiting Justice of lnvercargill Prison, and Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., a Visiting Justice of the New Plymouth Prison. It is understood, that Captain C. M'Arthur, Messrs. Frederick Bates, C. 'S. Stafford, and J. C. Gardner are not standing for re-election to tho Onslow Borough Council. The Rev. J. W. Scott, chaplain to H.M.S.-New Zealand, will preach at St. Peter's, Willis Street, on Sunday evening. ___________
