Two resolutions standing in the name of Councillor Shirtcliffe were passed by the City Council on Thursday. The motions had regard to the city's intangible asset of .£3182 (paid for tho resumption of M'Ardle's lease), which, ho urged, should bo written off in two years, and not in six years as originally proposed. Tho council accepted Councillor Shirtcliffc's proposal. The following additional regulation rjovorning tho transmission of registered letters is gazetted :—"Letters addressed to places beyond New Zealand and posted in any • automatic registration machine shall, if insufficiently prepaid, bo detained and forwarded to the Dead Letter Office, to be there opened and returned to the senders; provided that if the name and address of the sender of any such insufficiently prepaid registered letter appear on the outside of the envelope, the letter shall be returned unopened to the sender by the Chief Postmaster of tho district." • . The total for tho later period illchides specie to the' value of .£150,000 exported • 'from Wellington, aiid tho later total includes specie exports from Auckland of .£SIOO. Imports during tho quarter ended March 3), 1913, totalled XG,503,520, as against .£5,517,950 in tho corresponding quarter of 1912. Tho imports for last quarter included specio to the yaluo of .£235,380; and imports in tho corresponding quarter of 1912 included specie to the value of .£10,005. Five hundred motor-car owners aro said to resido in ' thV oit'y "and suburbs, and the samo area is said to house between 700 and 800 owners of motor-cycles. Those items were mentioned at a meeting of motorists held iu tho Chamber of Commcrco last night.: . Gold entered for exportation from the Dominion from April 1, 1857, to March 31, 1913, according to a return published in tho current Gazette totalled : 20.595.722 ounoss, valued at ,£80,961,020. During the quarter ended March 31, 1913, the irold export totalled 90,571 ounces*, .£361,982, and during the corresponding quarter of tho preceding year the oxnort was 101,375 ounces valued at ■fi-iOI.SSO". The Government offices throughout the Dominion will bo closed on Wednesday, April 23, 1913, in celebration of. St. George's Day and St. David's Day. ' During March, vital statistics in the four chief centres and their adjacent suburban boroughs were as. under:—Auckland: Births, 193; deaths, 97. Wellington: Births, 168; deaths. 53. Christchurch: Births, 118; deaths, 50. Dunedin: Births, 93; deaths, GS. Tho total births in the four chief cities and suburban boroughs amounted :10.577, against 560 in February —an increase of 17. The deaths in March wero 2GS—an increase of 12 as compared with February. Of the total deaths, males contributed 13G, females 132. Sixtynine of the deaths were of children under fivo years of age, being 25.71 per cent of the whole number; 56 of theso were under ono year of age. \ , During her stay in port H.M.S. Pyranius has taken into her bunkers 200 tons of Paparoa coal. It is said thai tho smokeless qualities of this coal arc finding favour in tho navy in theso waters. During tho quarter ended March 31, 1913, IG9 vessels of a total tonnage of 419,102 tons and with crows numbering 12,010, lVero cleared outwards from New Zealand ports. ■ For the corresponding quarter of 1912 tho figures wero: 162 vessels, 13G.91G tons, 11,556 members of crows. Vessfcls entered inwards during the quarter ended March 31, 1913, numbered 172, of 456,283 tons, and their crews numbered 12,322 persons.
