MR. SAMUEL VAILE.
, AUCKLAND PIONEER DEAD. (By Telegraph.—Pres6 Association.) Auckland, April If!. Tho death has occurred of Sir. Samuel Vaile, in his 85th year. Mr. Vaile was a partner in the firm of Samuel Vailo and Sons, land and estate agents, but had retired from business some years ago. lie was well known throughout New Zealand, being a/ strong supporter of tho stage system of railways. Ho was one of tho pioneers of Auckland. Mr. Samuel Vailo is one of Auckland's best-known and most highly-respected citizens, and is known throughout New Zealand for his, long and consistent advocacy of the stage or zone system of railway administration. Mr. Vailo, was born in Loudon iu 1828, and arrived in , Auckland iai 1813. In 1850 ho sailed for San Francisco, but was left for tliMo months with four companions oil I'itcairn Island, and worked his passage hack to Auckland via Honolulu. Iu 1552 lie founded tho business of S. Amd J. R. Vaile. In 1900 ho was elected president of (lie Auckland Chamber of Commerce, which lie represented rtt Commonwealth celebrations and a,t tho conference of 1 chambers at Wellington in 1902. Ho was the author of "New Zealand Railways" (18SG), "Railways arad Social Conditions" (1894), "Social Problems" (1599), "Empire Trado" (1001). > In 1893 he was presented \yith a service of plate for. his efforts in tho cause of railway reform.
