c A DEPARTING JOURNALIST. Prior toi his departure for Christchurch last evening to assume tho assislantoditorship of tho "Press," Mr. M. C. Keane, who has Just retired from tho position of assistant-editor of The Dominion, after nearly 6ix years' semco, was invited to meet the combined stall's of the paper in tho editor's room. On behalf of tho staff, tho editor, Mr. C. Earle, voiced tho general regret which was felt at Mr. Keano's departure from Wellington by all who had been associated with him on The Dominion, and who had learned to respect him, not only for the good work ho had dono for the paper, but on. account of his many personal qualities, which had endeared him 'to them all. Ho felt that rapid as had been Mr. Keano's ascent in _ journalism, he was destined to rise still higher in his profession, and when that day eamo there would bo uono more sincerely pleased than his old associates on Tin: Dominion. Mv. Earlo also spoko of his personal relations with 'Mr. Keano as particularly happy ones. On behalf the combined staffs ho presented Mr. lvoano with a serviceable oak smoker's companion, well loaded with tobacco and cigars, bearing a suitable inscription on a silvor plate; and also with a handsome bag for Mrs. lveane, and a serviceable mechanical model of IJ.M.S. New Zcalaud for Master Wm. Keaue. Mr. Blanton, manager of The Dominion, also spoko ill complimentary terms of Mr. Keano's high personal qualities, and wished him success and good' fortune. Tho recipient expressed the regret at the severanco of tho many lies of dear friendship lie had formed ill Wellington, and said that ho felt that in spirit ho would always be a membor of Tjie Dominion staff. He also returned thanks for the kind thoughts which had prompted tho presentations. Mr. N. E. Burton, who has been sul>editor of Tub Dominion since itsjnccpiion, lias been appointed Mr. Keanes successor as assistant-editor. =====
