RAILWAYMEN'S GRIEVANCES.
/ MINISTER EXPLAINS THE POSITION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Chrlstchurch, April 16. Tho Hon. W. H. Hcrries, Minister for Railways, whilst passing through Christchurch this morning, was interviewed with respect to the .resolution arrived at Inst Sunday at the meeting of railwoymen protesting against tho action of tho Government in closing the avenue of promotion from second to first division. Mr. Hcrries said tlfat apparently there must be some misconception, for 311 st recently tho men who had originally como from' the second division had boon promoted and were being promoted. Tho Government Railways Amendment Act, which had been pasped last session, had merely filtered tho schedules of tho division list in order to grant certain increases of nay, and tho division system had not been changed. That amending Act also recognised tho Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, and any point of difficulty could'always be brought forward by it, and its agents could appear, and bi heard oil any appeal. Tho question will Ito more fully discussed when a deputation from the men waits upon tho Minister .on his return lo Clia-istchurch.
