DUCHESS OF CONNAUGHT.
NEW ZEALAND'S SYMPATHY,
At tho request of the Prime Minister, his ■ Excellency tho Governor forwarded tho following telegram to his Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught on Saturday last:—"On behalf of myself, my Government, and the peoplo of New Zealand, I beg respectfully to express our thankfulness at tho news that the operation on Her Royal Highness has been successful, and wc pray that her recovery to health may bo complete. "(Signed) LIVERPOOL." His Exccllc'noy has to-day received tho following reply from his Royal Highness: —"Grateful for kind message. Please, thank your Government. Duchess progressing satisfactorily. "(Signed) CONNAUGHT."
A white kiwi, a very raro bird, now domiciled at Rotorua, is coveted by tho Wellington Zoological _ Society, which desires to add the kiwi 'to the collections in Newtown Park. The Rov. J. Crowes' is at present in negotiation with tho Government on tho subject on behalf of his society. A man was arrostod yesterday by Detective Cameron on a charge of having deserted the steamer Turakma on February 5. Detective Bailey arrested another man on a charge of his having obtained a small sum of money by false pretences. Both will be among tlioso brought beforo the Magistrate's Court this morning. A deputation from tho Wellington Tramways Union is to interview tho Hon. W. Frnscr and tho Hon. H. D. Bell to-day •you the nubiect of tramway regulations.
