NOTES AND COMMENTS.

IBr Glexoob.l At Hastings yesterday morning, Canute .registered a' pleasing .gallop by defeating Bronze over ten furlongs, and, as a consequence, the Charlemagne colt was well supported in. doubles to win the Hawke's Bay. Cup. It is a significant fact that despite the weeding out of several secondraters from. It. J. Mason's stables, Canute, though up to the present a failure, has remained in the ownership of Mr. G. D. Greenwood. This suggests that tho colt, at some time or other, has shown Mason something good in the way of a gallop, and probably the reason of his not having done. better in the past is that he is unreliable. Ho certainly races anything but generously, and in his winning effort at Trentham—his sole success, by tho way—he deliberately stopped after putting paid to the account of Portland Lady, and .Deeley had to give him two or threo smart cuts to make him finish his task. In the St. Leger hero ho ran , quite a good raceVuuder Bst. 71b. to Bon Ton, and' Ilia form in that race was good enough to give him a chance in any mile and a half raco, with the minimum impost. Perhaps, as ho is not a lightweight's rids, a change may bo made to-morrow, and Deeley may be put up at about 7st.. 51b. Other starters likely to bo well fancied in the event named are: Bronze Bst. 121b. and Merrivonia 7st. 71b. Tho latter finished .at a great rate at Awapmii, and is to bo ridden by C. .Jimerson. Several of the starters in the Karamu Hurdles, to-morrow are not likely to be ready to see out a 'fast mile and threequarters over fences, and they aro probably being raced with a view to hurrying them nlong in • their preparation for cross-country events later. on in tho season.; Amongst the number who will bo more .at 'lioine between the flags are Whakawelpa, Corazon, and The Spaniard. The Player, who is reported to be under orders for Sydney, will be a runner in the Hack Hurdles at Hastings tomorrow. The half-brother to Faro will have to show in a favourable light or the trip to Australia may be abandoned. The field in the Autumn Handicap at Hastings is" a good one, and a very smart mile horse in Merry Frank is at thq top of the handicap with flst. The whole field will know that they have been racing beforfc Vi (Gst. 121b.) is done with. Mr. S. Waldeii, who for many years has acted as racecourse detective for tho Hawke's Bay Jockey Club and Napier Park Racing Club meetings, has resigned from both clubs ojving to ill-health and advancing years, and Mr. S. Kraetzer has been appointed to fill tho vacancy in each instance. Mr. G. P. Donnelly, president of tho Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, left for a trip to England last week. At a meeting of stewards of the Masterton Racing Club on Saturday last, tho -following was unanimously approved;— \ ''That the club strongly protests against thtf action of the New Zealand Racinu Conference in deleting Easter Saturday from tho racing calendar, inasmuch as it seriously imperils' the existence of this and other raciug clubs iu a similar position, and for tho reason that it unwarrantably interferes with the rights and liberties of tho Sporting "Association." Coroniform was sent home to Riccarton on Saturday night, in charge of A. J. Prendorgast. After the Multiform horse failed to find a buyer at auction in Palmerston North last Friday, an offer of 225 guineas Ivas made privately for him and refused by his owner. Owners are reminded' that nominations for tho Egmont Racing Club's winter meeting close at 0 o'clock td-r.ight, with tha club's secretary, Mr. J. Turton, Hawera. Acceptances for tho first day's events at tho Maslcrl.ou Racing Club's autumn meeting close on Friday next. Nominations for the Ashburtou autumn meeting are due on Friday next. Several modifications have, been deemed necessary in the Rule.s of liacing (says the Paris correspondent of I hi' London "Sportsman"). There is no idea of desisting from the hunt for "dopers," but tlui responsibilities incurred on deteelion will be extended to trainers. Daes this inlentioiL release owners from all danger, and lias its manifestation concluded the lec;,d proceedings undertaken by M. de Monbol for thedjsqiiulitication of Br.nljnn Rose?
