H.- ICarSten, of .W-aikanae, intends to farm at Manaltau, liaving leased 450 acres from Mr. W. H. Simcox. Prior to.the Rev. H. T. Stealey leaving Clarevillo for this district, ho was. admitted to tlie brotherhood of tho C.E.M.S., and, among other presentations, received a silver-mounted oak salad bowl from the staff and students of the Hikurangi College,-where he was principal. Mr. and Mrs: Byron Brown, accompanied'by their daughter, left here this week for Christchurch, where the lastnamed two will tako' part in tho corn•petitions. ' ' ' _ A fire, luckily in its incipient stage, ; was discovered'in Mr. C. H. Williams's shop oil Saturday afternoon,, but was thrown into a smart flame by tho pouring on of benzine, which one of the assistant's thought was No damage, however, was done to the building. Numbers of people are 'leaving hero daily for the purpose of visiting tho warship, now'in port in Wellington., Tho arrivnl of a contingent of men-o'-warsmen to this town is looked forward to. CARTERTON. i Mr; R. Cooper, of Gladstone, has donated to tho Wairarnpa Rugby Union to provide a trophy to bo competed for by teams in the third grade. At tho annual meeting of tho union, Mr. Cooper was accorded a volo of thanks. Tho Post and Telegraph Dopartinent has purchased a site at Clarevillo from' Mr.' C. Campbell for a post oflico building. A special traip passed through Carterton on Monday morning convoying Territorials .to \ the camp at Oringi. Tlieso are men who. have not completed tho necessary number of parades during tho year, anil are putting in extra tinio at the camp. There'were two hundred and forty-seven on the train, including nine from Carterton, Tho main body goes into camp c.n Friday. .
