CHRISTCH URCH MATCHES. ' (By Telegraph.—Preja Association.) Christchurch. April 12. The weather was beautifully fine this afternoon for the opening of the Canterbury Rugby Union's competition, but the grounds woro in most cases rather harder thap the players appreciated. The results occasioned some surprises, as last, yejr's champions (Merivale) were beaten by Linwood, after a close game, and Canterbury College gained a rather unexpected victory over Christchurch, their superior conditions being largely responsible for {heir success. Old !Boys, showing very fair combination; beat Albion rather comfortably, and Sydenham had not much difficulty ill defeating Majist Old Bojs. Results:—Old Boys 21 v. Albion 8; Linwood 5 v. Merivale 3; Sydenham 13 v. Marist Old Boys 0; Canterbury College 8 v, Christohurch 6.
